Overview:
Community Development:
Scouts grow up following the scout principle, scout law and promise. Therefore, social problems need concerted efforts of all actors including the efforts of young people.
Recognizing the huge potentials of scouts and considering the social dimension of scouting, Bangladesh Scouts involves young people in different community development activities as per need of the community and interest of the young people. The scouts in Bangladesh work on different community development activities like immunization, child health care, personal hygiene, sanitation, blood donation, diarrhoea management, safe water supply, development of kitchen garden, waste and garbage disposal, tree plantation, nature conservation, wild life conservation, drug abuse, disaster response, environment promotion and on other social issues. Working with the community people, the scouts get the opportunity to know the problems, which the community people are facing. They also get the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills on the related issues and pass on the knowledge and skills to other young people as well as community people through child-to-child and child-to-community approach. They earn proficiency badges and working with the community people, they develop their interpersonal skills.
Bangladesh Scouts implemented different twinning activities with other NSOs. The first twinning project on CD activities of Bangladesh Scouts is Bangladesh-Australia Child Health Project (BACH Project). The project was implemented during 1986-92 in 25 Bangladeshi villages. A total of 239 Australian Scouts and Guide worked with 784 Bangladesh Scouts, Rovers, Rangers and non-Scout young people.
With that experience, Bangladesh Scouts implemented different twinning projects with Korea, France and Scout Association of Japan. During 1998-2003, Bangladesh Scouts and Scout Association of Japan implemented Bangladesh-Japan Joint ORT Project in 30 remote villages in Bangladesh. Under this programme, a team of Japanese Rovers and Leaders visited Bangladesh and worked with their counterparts on community health and nutrition. The evaluation report showed about a huge change in the project villages relating to knowledge and practice on the implemented activities.
Bangladesh Scouts and Scout Association of Japan have been implementing Bangladesh-Japan Joint Primary Health Care and Nature Conservation Project since 2004. The project will come to an end in 2007. The mid-term evaluation report showed a significant change in the knowledge and practice level on primary health care and nature conservation among the community people.
Bangladesh Scouts implemented environment promotional activities in 10 villages throughout the country with the support of Asia-Pacific Scout Foundation during 2000-2001. The Bangladeshi Scouts and Rovers implemented those environment promotional activities by implementing ``Promotion of Environment and Friendly Practices Through Scout'' knows as POETS Project.
