Jamboree on
the train
Jamboree
on the Train, the first of its kind in
Bangladesh, and a not very common event
in the world, was a great occasion, not
only for the scouts, but also for the
whole nation. Though it was a national
event, it was a celebration, as part of
the centenary programme, celebrated throughout
the world, marking the hundredth year
of the scouting movement. The Law Advisor,
Barrister Mainul Hossain inaugurated the
three-day programme on 29th. June at the
Kamlapur Railway station, Dhaka. He expressed
the hope that the members of Bangladesh
Scouts would play a vital role in establishing
peace and friendship in the South Asian
region through the scout movement. The
advisor also hoped that the Jamboree on
the Train would promote this mode of traveling
among the people of the country. His speech
echoed the decision of the regional leaders
at the 14th Summit of the South Asian
Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)
to foster Regional Connectivity and establish
better understanding through tourism,
exchange of youths and simplification
of traveling procedures among the member
states of the region.
Dr. Shah Mohammad Farid,
President of Bangladesh Scouts chaired
the function. Mr. M. Mahbub-uz-zaman,
Advisor Bangladesh Scouts and Mr. M. Fazlur
Rahman, Chief National Commissioner of
Bangladesh Scouts, Communications Secretary,
Dr. Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, Mr. Belayet
Hossain, Director General of Bangladesh
Railway, also addressed the gathering.
The theme of this very
special event was Knowledge, Thrill and
Friendship . The train journey of the
Jamboree kicked off from the port-city
of Chitagong, on 28th June. A total of
3000 scouts and scouts-leaders under 11
zones of the Bangladesh Scouts took part
in this Jamboree. Scout friends from Nepal
and India also participated in the jamboree.
The
jamboree on the train travelled almost
800 km from Chittagong, on the South-East
of the country to Dinajpur, on the North-West.
The programme included various educative
and recreational activities to provide
the scouts with practical knowledge on
different aspects and issues. The participants
took part in 9 different challenges, which
were: i. Scout skills ii. Songs and Songs
iii. Community Development iv. Making
friendship and exchanging gifts v. Math
Olympiad and General knowledge competition
vi. Fun and games vii. Campfire viii.
Writing journey experience/poems &
ix. Recitation of poems/reading books.
These challenges were organized during
the journey both within the train as well
as at the on-route camps.
Participants of the
Jamboree enjoyed this unique opportunity
of scouting on the train and also a rare
experience of visiting the railway establishments
on the way of their journey. Besides,
they also made friendship with the scouts
from home and abroad.
The train touched Laksham,
Akhaura, Dhaka, Tongi, Gazipur, Jamuna
bridge, Ishardi, Abdulpur, Natore, Shantahar,
Jaypurhat, Parbotipur railway stations
on its way.
The
Grand Campfire was held soon after dusk
on 30th. June 07 and the historic event
officially came to a close, in the morning
on 1st. July 07 at the Dinajpur Zilla
School premises, with high hopes and aspirations
to carry onward the lessons of the theme
Knowledge, Thrill and Friendship . So
that sometime in near future Bangladesh
Scouts can be at the vanguard of SAARC
Jamboree Train from Dhaka to Afghanistan,
the latest member of this regional co-operation,
carrying the banner of peace and friendship
throughout South Asia
